We have moved from taxation to robbery - Daniel Domelevo

Mr Yaw Daniel Domelevo is Ghana's Auditor-General

Former Auditor-General, Mr. Daniel Domelevo, has characterised the country's tax system as a blatant form of robbery. He did not minsed words when he quizzed whether the excessive taxes are "not day light robbery"? In his assessment, the tax system imposes heavy burdens on taxpayers.

In an interview on JoyNews' AM Show on Monday, April 8, Mr. Domelevo highlighted the constant taxation endured by taxpayers, even after paying income tax and taxes on earnings. He emphasized that unless the challenges imposed by excessive taxes are addressed, ordinary taxpayers will continue to suffer.

He labelled it as "daylight robbery" that necessitates immediate attention without further delay whe he said, “We have moved from taxation to robbery and the reason why I said that is because when you receive income or you earn any money at all, there will be a withholding tax or a pay-as-you-earn.”

“So it is taxed and immediately you want to use the rest to buy anything at all, there is a long list of taxes waiting for you which you have to pay and even when you are paying for the thing that you bought including the tax, you are taxed again; is that not robbery?”

The President of IMANI Africa, Franklin Cudjoe in an interview with Citi TV on Saturday, January 13, underscored the significance of prudent economic management in navigating the challenges posed by the various tax measures. “I think it is important to be very careful how we want to deal with this economy. I pity the next president of this country because what it means is that you are going to deal with this nonsense of taxes and there will be no breathing room at all,” he stated.

BBN news producer added that, in sympathising with Ghana's future president and citizens in the light of the ongoing burdening implementation of taxes by the Akufo-Addo government, well-meaning Ghanaians must pass through all necessary means for government to rescind it decision in introducing new taxes or upward review of existing ones.
