  • Mahama writes; President Akufo-Addo’s anti-democratic and arrogant nature undermines peaceful power transition

The flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress NDC HE John Dramani Mahama has written on president Akufo-Addo’s recent public utterances towards the 2024 general elections and posture towards traditional leaders which has generated a lot of talks in the country. He described the president’s recent pronouncements as arrogant and anti-democratic, an attitude capable of undermining a peaceful power transition while also citing his recent demand to traditional leaders (Chiefs) to stand and greet him. He reminded president Nana Addo that "that only the votes of the good people of Ghana and the will of the Almighty God will determine who succeeds him." Mr. Mahama intimated that the NDC will not be intimidated in this year’s election. Read the full details below.... "The almost eight years of Nana Addo/Bawumia have done extensive damage to our democracy. As the clock ticks towards the end of his mandate, the President's attitude and utterances give much cause for concern. His recent insistence that chiefs stand up to greet him should be a matter of serious consternation for political watchers. He also recently stated that he cannot be succeeded by somebody he has defeated in previous elections. This connotes an arrogant nature and smacks an inherently anti-democratic personality, undermining the fundamental principle of the peaceful transition of power. Nana Addo should be reminded that only the votes of the good people of Ghana and the will of the Almighty God will determine who succeeds him. This reaffirms the people's power in shaping our nation's future. Suppose we are to draw lessons from Ayawaso West Wuogon and the state-sponsored killing of eight innocent citizens during the 2020 election; we know that this President is capable of anything and would not hesitate to trample on Ghana's constitution to manipulate the process in favour of his preferred successor. I can assure him that Ghanaians and the National Democratic Congress will not allow this to happen. As I advised him in Damongo on Saturday, the best legacy he can leave this country is to superintend over a peaceful, transparent, and credible election." • We have moved from taxation to robbery - Daniel Domelevo

Former Auditor-General, Mr. Daniel Domelevo, has characterised the country's tax system as a blatant form of robbery. He did not minsed words when he quizzed whether the excessive taxes are "not day light robbery"? In his assessment, the tax system imposes heavy burdens on taxpayers. In an interview on JoyNews' AM Show on Monday, April 8, Mr. Domelevo highlighted the constant taxation endured by taxpayers, even after paying income tax and taxes on earnings. He emphasized that unless the challenges imposed by excessive taxes are addressed, ordinary taxpayers will continue to suffer. He labelled it as "daylight robbery" that necessitates immediate attention without further delay whe he said, “We have moved from taxation to robbery and the reason why I said that is because when you receive income or you earn any money at all, there will be a withholding tax or a pay-as-you-earn.” “So it is taxed and immediately you want to use the rest to buy anything at all, there is a long list of taxes waiting for you which you have to pay and even when you are paying for the thing that you bought including the tax, you are taxed again; is that not robbery?” The President of IMANI Africa, Franklin Cudjoe in an interview with Citi TV on Saturday, January 13, underscored the significance of prudent economic management in navigating the challenges posed by the various tax measures. “I think it is important to be very careful how we want to deal with this economy. I pity the next president of this country because what it means is that you are going to deal with this nonsense of taxes and there will be no breathing room at all,” he stated. BBN news producer added that, in sympathising with Ghana's future president and citizens in the light of the ongoing burdening implementation of taxes by the Akufo-Addo government, well-meaning Ghanaians must pass through all necessary means for government to rescind it decision in introducing new taxes or upward review of existing ones. • Release the KPMG report on SML-GRA contract to Ghanaians; don't sit on it – Domelevo to Akufo-Addo

Former Auditor General, Daniel Domelevo is urging President Akufo-Addo to promptly release the KPMG audit report regarding the revenue mobilisation contract between the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) and Strategic Mobilisation Ghana Ltd (SML). In emphasising on why the report must be released without delay, he stated among other things that, it would make the President more accountability to Ghanaians than shielding any wrongdoing within his government. Moreover, releasing the report early will not breed further negative perceptions about the fight against corruption. In an interview on JoyNews' AM Show on Monday, April 8, Mr Domelevo said, "What I expected was that immediately the report was ready, it should be made public because the accountability is not to the President but to the people of Ghana. The money is people’s funds. So anytime those reports are ready, they must be put in the public." Also, Prof. Gyampo has asked Akufo-Addo not to sit on KPMG’s report on SML/GRA contract exposé. Background On January 2 of this year, President Nana Akufo-Addo commissioned KPMG to investigate the contract between SML and GRA, prompted by an exposé by the Fourth Estate. President Akufo-Addo has since received the KPMG audit report regarding the revenue mobilisation contract between GRA and SML. It has been announced via a Facebook post by Eugene Arhin, the Director of Communications at the Presidency, on Wednesday, April 3 that, the report was delivered to him on Wednesday, March 27.
